SAMPLE QUESTIONS — SCRIPT
Certificate for General Education, Listening Examination.
Sample Questions, Semester One, 2005 to 2006.
While I am reading your instructions, the teacher will check from the back of the class to make sure that everybody can hear. The teacher will not stop the tape. You will hear each text three times. The first time only listen, the second time write, and the third time check your work. When the tape finishes, write your answers on your answer paper.
The examination will start now. Question One. Look at Question One on your question paper.
You’re going to hear a conversation between a man and a woman.
But first you have thirty seconds to study the task. [ 30 seconds of ticks. ]
Now listen for the first time.
Woman What’s wrong with you, Jaber? Are you ill?
Man Well, not really ill…I just feel a bit sick.
Woman Do you have a headache or something?
Man No, no, it’s just a funny feeling in my stomach. To tell the truth, I’m a bit scared, actually. It’s the first time I’ve been on a plane.
Woman Oh, I see. But don’t worry. That’s perfectly normal. It was the same for me the first time I flew.
Man Really?
Woman Oh yes, when we were about to take off, I suddenly had a sharp pain in my stomach. I also felt a bit dizzy.
Man So what did you do?
Woman Nothing. I didn’t want to tell anybody, because I felt embarrassed. So I just sat there and waited. But everything was alright in the end.
Man Yes, I know it’s silly, but I can’t help thinking that something terrible is going to happen.
Woman You just need to relax and forget about everything. Shall I ask the stewardess to bring you something to drink?
Man No thanks, I’m OK.
Woman When we land, you can go to the hotel and have a rest.
Man Do you think I’ll be able to attend the conference tomorrow?
Woman Of course you will. You just need something to take your mind off things. Listen, why don’t I take you to visit the old city. Marrakesh is fascinating. There’s a huge suq where you can get everything. Moroccan handicrafts are very beautiful, especially leather goods.
Man Oh, that sounds interesting. I’ve always wanted to have a genuine leather jacket. But for the moment, I think I’m going to get some sleep. How long have we been flying?
Woman About three hours, I think.
Man Only three hours? It seems much longer than that.
Woman Well, only five more hours to go! And if you sleep, the time will pass quickly.
Man Yes, you’re right.
Now listen again and complete the task.
Now listen for the last time and check your work.
(Pause: 15 seconds) That is the end of Question One. Now go on to Question Two.
Look at Question Two on your question paper.
You’re going to hear a talk about a city of the future.
But first you have thirty seconds to study the task. [ 30 seconds of ticks ]
Now listen for the first time.
In the future, the world’s population will continue to increase. This will cause serious problems. For example, how will we find enough food for everyone? Where will everyone live? Now, a French company has come up with an idea for solving some of these problems by building a ‘floating city’, where people can live. It’s basically a huge ship. According to the company’s plans, it’ll be over 1,300 metres long, 220 metres wide and 120 metres high. In other words, it’ll be six times larger than any ship ever built! A hundred thousand people will live on this ship, which will be called ‘Gargantua’. It’ll have everything that a normal city on land has, including flats, schools, a hospital, supermarkets, a marina, an airport for private planes, and all kinds of entertainment and sports facilities. ‘Gargantua’, which is due to be ready in 2009, will sail very slowly across the oceans, and residents will be able to forget that the rest of the overcrowded world exists. But before you get too excited, there’s one thing I should mention. Because of the high cost of renting a flat on the ship, most people won’t be able to afford to live there. So unless you’re very rich, you’ll have to find somewhere else to stay!
Now listen again and complete the task.
Now listen for the last time and check your work.
(Pause: 15 seconds) That is the end of Question Two. Now go on to Question Three.
Look at Question Three on your question paper.
You’re going to hear four people speaking. Who are they? For each speaker, choose one of the items in the box. Write the letter in the space provided.
Example: “Now, students. Who can tell me the correct answer to number five?”
The speaker is a teacher. So the correct answer is ‘F’.
Now listen for the first time.
1. “Take these pills twice a day for the next five days. If you don’t feel any better, some and see me again.” (F)2. “I’m sorry. We don’t have any fresh fruit today. We’re having a problem with our suppliers. But they’ve promised us a new delivery, so everything should be OK by the weekend.” (M)3. “A single room for two nights will cost you thirty rials, including breakfast. But we can give you a discount if you stay for at least a week.” (F)4. “I’ve checked the brakes and the engine as you told me. The brakes are OK, but I think you’ll have to change the spark plugs.” (M)
Now listen again and complete the task.
Now listen for the last time and check your work.
(Pause: 15 seconds)
